Résumés
Although there is no such thing as a "perfect" resume, there are certain aspects
that are "a must" to any style that you choose.
- Contact information. Include phone, mail and e-mail contact information
on the first page and at least your name on each subsequent page. Now that e-mail
addresses are part of your business contact information, consider changing it
if it is too cute or implies something less than professionalism. The same is
true of voicemail messages-if it is too casual, a negative first impression can
eliminate you from consideration for an opportunity.
- Career objective. This is totally optional and should be considered
carefully since it can actually eliminate you from consideration for an opportunity
if your objective doesn't match.
- Professional experience. List each position held in reverse chronological
order (most recent first). If you held multiple positions within the same company,
list them all to show advancement and growth. Briefly describe your responsibilities
highlighting your accomplishments. Use percentages, rankings, and awards to differentiate
you and demonstrate your effectiveness.
- Other components. Include education, professional training, affiliations/appointments,
licenses, technical skills, languages and community involvement activities.
- Personal information. Do not include personal information such as marital
status, number of children, religious affiliation, or years to retirement.
